YSL CERTIFICATE

Working with youth in a public library setting is a privilege and a responsibility. Libraries play an important role in fostering literacy, curiosity, and lifelong learning by providing access to diverse books and resources, engaging programs, and welcoming spaces where young people can explore their interests. By connecting children and teens with meaningful resources, librarians help cultivate a love of reading, support educational growth, and empower youth to become informed, critical thinkers. Beyond literacy, libraries also serve as inclusive community hubs where young people can develop their social skills, creativity, and confidence in a safe and supportive environment.

Earning the Youth Services and Literature Certificate through the University of Southern Mississippi has strengthened my ability to serve young patrons. This program increased my knowledge of youth literature, resources, and best practices for engaging children and teens in meaningful ways. Through coursework and hands-on projects, I improved my skills in reader advisory, program design, and collection development, ensuring that I can curate inclusive and diverse materials that reflect the needs of all young readers. This certificate has improved my ability to create dynamic, literacy-rich experiences that inspire and support youth in their educational and personal journeys.
