LIS 641 Public Libraries
For this assignment, I assessed a public library, spoke with a librarian, and developed a service learning project based on an identified need. The goal was to create something mutually beneficial for the library and me as a librarian. After researching the community and exploring the library’s current partnerships and services, I designed a project that addressed a programming need. I submitted my idea in three parts: the original proposal, an outline and progress report, and a final report reflecting on the experience. My chosen project was teaching an art class on creating Zentangles, which allowed me to share a creative skill while supporting the library in offering an accessible, engaging program for the public. Then, I was able to implement the program for the library. This assignment helped me see the impact libraries can have through community connections and programming.
REFLECTION
My experience in LIS 641 was incredibly relevant to my work as a librarian because it allowed me to connect my classroom learning with addressing a real community need. By assessing the library and talking directly with a librarian, I saw how important it is to understand the library’s mission and the community it serves. Planning and teaching a program helped me build confidence in program development, communication, and outreach. It also reinforced how libraries can be creative spaces that bring people together, not just places for books and research.
This assignment also gave me practical experience in thinking like a community-centered librarian. I had to consider things like identifying a gap in services, planning something realistic and useful, and collaborating with library staff to make it happen. It reminded me how essential partnerships and outreach are and how libraries thrive when they’re responsive to local needs. These are the same skills I use now as a librarian, whether I’m organizing events, working with local organizations, or figuring out what kinds of programs people will be interested in.
Overall, LIS 641 and the service learning project helped me grow both personally and professionally, and it continues to influence how I approach my role as a librarian—always looking for ways to connect, collaborate, and create meaningful experiences for the community.
