LIS 557 Information Technology & Libraries: Create a Blog
Blog: New Branch Manager
This assignment was to create a blog focused on a scholarly or educational topic, and I chose to make it about being a new branch manager. The requirements included developing at least five pages and writing five posts with a description, at least two related links, and two images. At the time, I was naturally drawn to my new role as a branch manager of just 25 days. Understandably, this new position occupied my thoughts, and it made sense to create a blog that reflected my responsibilities. The five pages I developed for this assignment were About, Arts & Crafts, Book Club, Displays, and Story Time. Each page represented a different aspect of the library programming and services I managed at the time. By creating this blog, I met the assignment requirements and created a practical resource that reflected my real-world experiences and aspirations as a new branch manager.
REFLECTION:
Creating a blog helped me develop important skills that contributed to my ability to fulfill my role as a branch manager. From writing and project management to research and digital literacy, this blog assignment strengthened my ability to plan, organize, and present information clearly. I had to think critically about how to curate and share content and make sure it was relevant, engaging, and accessible. These skills are similar to what I do when developing library programs, managing the collection, or supporting staff and patrons. Evaluating resources and structuring content are skills that translate into making informed decisions, overseeing library services, and ensuring that the branch meets the needs of the community.
Writing blog posts improved my communication and outreach skills and helped me engage with an audience in a way that is similar to the public-facing aspects of my job. Just as I wrote blog posts to reach readers effectively, I also aim to connect with patrons through library services, programming, and marketing strategies. Additionally, creating a blog strengthened my technical and problem-solving abilities, such as website navigation, content creation, and troubleshooting the use of digital tools, all of which are valuable as a branch manager. Working through the technical issues while creating the blog is similar to the skills needed to assist patrons and staff with different forms of technology and software. Ultimately, creating a blog strengthened my ability to lead, adapt to new challenges, and foster meaningful connections within my branch and the larger community.
