LIS 511 Collection Development & Management: Intellectual Freedom
Video: Intellectual Freedom
The assignment was to write an "elevator speech" directed to anyone who does not know about intellectual freedom or how libraries feel about it. An elevator speech is a concise, memorable, and persuasive speech that is only 60 seconds long. This speech about intellectual freedom is intended to communicate what it is, how it serves everyone, and what libraries do to promote it. I really enjoyed writing the script and making the video for this assignment.
REFLECTION
By understanding intellectual freedom principles, I can uphold the library and information profession's commitment to open access of information and protect patrons' right to read, explore, and learn without censorship or restriction. It gives me the tools to handle book challenges or censorship requests professionally, using established policies and guidelines to support diverse collections that reflect multiple viewpoints. It gives me tools to develop policies, select materials, and create programs that will provide equitable access to information and services. I can advocate for the library's role as a space for free expression, and ensure our resources, programs and services serve the community fairly and without bias. I can also train my staff to handle sensitive topics, privacy concerns, and patron inquiries professionally.
The process of writing the script and making the video improved my communication, marketing, and leadership skills, all of which are essential to working in the library and information profession. I had to organize my thoughts clearly and concisely to make my message engaging and understandable in various situations, such as training staff, promoting library services, explaining something to patrons, or speaking with stakeholders. It also improved my technical skills in setting up the scene, recording the video, and uploading it to YouTube. These skills are valuable for developing instructional materials, making videos for the library, and reaching a broader audience through online content. I can improve the library's digital presence and internal communication and create more engaging and inclusive ways to share information.
